parte de mi corazón

Desde que fui a Segovia hace muchos años por primera vez, me fascinó su arquitectura, en especial el acueducto romano. Ahora, con mi hija estudiando allá, debo decir que parte de mi corazón está en esa ciudad.
El proceso creativo también partió de una foto. Trabajar la arquitectura, la perspectiva y al difuminar el color del cielo fueron los retos de este óleo.


Ever since I went to Segovia for the first time, many years ago, I was fascinated by its architecture, especially by the Roman aqueduct. Now, with my daughter studying there, I have to admit, that part of my heart is in that city. 
The creative process started with a photo. Dealing with the architecture, perspective and shades of the sky were the main challenges of this oil painting.

Estudiando a Morandi

Descubrí a este pintor italiano porque mi profesor, en Singapur, me lo presentó y sugirió que mi pincelada se asemejaba a la suya así que decidí estudiar más su trabajo. La composición no es compleja, el dibujo es casi plano, y es en esa sencillez en donde sobresale el trabajo de Morandi, quien trabajo una serie limitada de objetos que se repiten, pero reorganizándolos y dándoles perspectivas distintas. Quiero seguir explorando.

I discovered this italian painter because my teacher introduced him to me and suggested that my brushing was sort of similar to his, so I decided to explore his work.  The composition is not complex, the drawing is almost flat, and this simplicity is what makes Morandi's work stand out. He worked with few objects, rearranging them and giving them different perspectives. I want to continue exploring.

En un viaje inolvidable a Cuzco con muy buenos amigos que conocí en distintas etapas de mi vida de expatriada, tuve la oportunidad de hacer un taller de cerámica. Esto fue en el Valle Sagrado, cerca del hotel donde nos hospedábamos. En este lugar, había un libro con figuras, y en un cuaderno de viaje, donde iba escribiendo mis experiencias, copié estos peces que luego pinté en acuarela.


During an unforgettable trip to Cuzco with very good friends that I met in different moments of my life as an expat, I had the opportunity to do a pottery workshop. This was in the Sacred Valley, near our hotel. In this place, there were books with images, and in my travel journal, where I was jotting down all my experiences, I copied these images that I then painted them with watercolor.

El ojo humano nos engaña mucho, y al aprender la técnica para hacer retratos ayuda mucho a controlarlo. Vemos las cosas más cerca o más grandes y hay que darle a la primera parte del dibujo en donde ubicas los elementos básicos antes de continuar con el dibujo y pasar a sombrear. Las luces y las sombras y los contrastes también son elementos esenciales, pero darle la expresión es lo que hará que retrato tenga el  parecido con el original.  Todo un reto.


The human eye constantly plays tricks on us, and when doing a portrait, learning the technique helps a lot to control it. We see things closer, or bigger and we need to master the first part of the process when you plot the basic elements before you continue with the drawing and start shading, Light and shade and contrasts are also essential, but giving expression to the face is what will make the portrait similar to the original one. It's a huge challenge.
